Kansas City Moving Checklist: Four Weeks Before Moving Day
| God’s Movers
A move across Kansas City can have a short drive and a long list of details. You still need access to both homes, a realistic inventory, packed boxes, and a plan for the belongings you will need that first night. Starting four weeks ahead gives you time to solve those details before they become moving-day delays.
Use this checklist for a house, apartment, or townhome move within Kansas City, Missouri. If your move is sooner, work through the same steps in order, beginning with the date, addresses, and access arrangements.
Four weeks before: define the move
Choose a preferred moving date and a backup if your schedule allows it. Check when you can actually collect keys or take possession of the new home. A closing appointment or lease start date does not always tell you the hour the property will be available.
Then make a room-by-room inventory. Include the basement, garage, shed, closets, and any storage unit. A bedroom count alone can miss a full workshop or several bookcases. Separate belongings into three groups: moving with the crew, traveling with you, and leaving the home before moving day.
- Record both full addresses, including apartment numbers and the Missouri designation.
- Note stairs, elevator access, long hallways, and the likely loading location at each address.
- List oversized furniture and heavy items separately, with photos and available dimensions.
- Decide whether you need packing help, loading and unloading, or additional stops.
- Request an estimate using the same inventory and service details for each company you contact.
When discussing local moving services, explain which details are confirmed and which depend on a landlord, seller, or property manager. That helps everyone plan around the same information.
Three weeks before: clear space and confirm access
Decide what will not move before buying packing supplies. Empty one closet at a time and arrange any donations or disposal separately. Do not leave a pile of unwanted furniture in the path the crew will use.
If either home is in an apartment or condominium building, contact management. Ask about elevator reservations, loading entrances, approved moving hours, and any paperwork required from your mover. Rules belong to the individual property, so confirm both ends even when the buildings are only a few blocks apart.
Walk the route from the room holding your largest item to the proposed loading location. Check doorways, turns, handrails, porch steps, and gates. A sofa that fits through a front door can still be difficult at a tight interior turn. Share photographs of the full route, not just the furniture.
Two weeks before: pack by destination
Start with things you do not use daily. Books, spare linens, decorations, and out-of-season clothing are useful early categories. Keep boxes manageable, use appropriate cushioning, and avoid mixing fragile items with loose heavy objects.
Label each box with its destination room and a short contents description. Put labels on a side as well as the top so they remain visible when boxes are stacked. If the new home has several bedrooms, use clear names such as front bedroom or upstairs office.
Photograph electronics connections before disconnecting them. Keep small hardware in labeled bags, and ask the mover how those bags should stay with disassembled furniture. Confirm who is responsible for taking furniture apart and putting it back together.
Arrange utilities and address changes with the relevant providers. Keep confirmation details together. For appliances, follow the manufacturer’s preparation instructions and arrange qualified help for any connections that require it.
One week before: resolve the unknowns
Send the moving company any changes to your inventory or addresses. Added boxes, another stop, or a different entrance can change the work involved. Confirm the arrival arrangements, contact numbers, scope of service, and payment terms.
Build an essentials kit that travels with you. Include keys, identification, medications, chargers, toiletries, a change of clothes, basic cleaning supplies, and anything children or pets need that day. Keep personal documents and small valuables under your own control.
Make a room plan for the new home. Decide where larger furniture should go before unloading begins. If space is tight, measure the intended furniture locations instead of relying on memory.
The day before and moving morning
Finish packing and clear the walking routes. Keep doorways, stairs, and landings free of boxes and loose rugs. Check the weather and discuss how wet entryways or other conditions will be handled. Arrange for children and pets to stay away from active loading areas.
On arrival, walk through the home with the crew. Point out fragile pieces, items staying behind, access concerns, and the boxes you need unloaded first. Before leaving, check cabinets, closets, outdoor areas, and utility spaces. At the destination, confirm placement and inspect the rooms before the crew departs.
